In-car displays and infotainment systems distract drivers significantly more than we previously realized, according to recent German study.
Modernization and digitalization have already transformed current cars into mobile computers with a variety of features and applications for the passengers’ safety and amusement.
However, it would appear that entertainment and security cannot coexist in the same area. This is supported by a poll that ADAC carried out in Germany. According to the report, an automobile is more risky the more functionality it has on its screen.
The newest cars now have driving features like changing the windshield wipers, driver assistance systems, adjusting the mirrors and steering wheel, etc. on the screen in addition to entertainment options like music or navigation.
“This requires more time and driver distraction and therefore represents a significant safety risk,” says ADAC.
