In order to provide fully automatic guidance for his next-generation vehicles, Luminar Technologies on Wednesday announced an expanded relationship with Mercedes-Benz Group.
Autonomous vehicles are a focus for General Motors’ car makers, but there are still legal and technological obstacles to overcome. A number of technology companies, including Alphabet Inc., Waymo, and the joint Apiv-Hyundai Motional venture, are working to create autonomous vehicles for use in commerce.
The luminar will provide the German automaker with lids, which are largely regarded as necessary for attaining fully autonomous driving and employ laser light impulses to calculate the distance between the sensor and an object.
In January of last year, Luminar and Mercedes-Benz announced their alliance.
The multi-billion dollar agreement will be supported by a factory being built in Asia, according to Palo Alto, California-based Luminar.
