General Motors’ subsidiary GM Energy has launched a new residential energy storage unit called the “GM Energy PowerBank,” which allows electric vehicle (EV) owners to harness, store, and manage electricity from the grid. This move builds on GM Energy’s broader commitment to energy solutions for EV customers, as the PowerBank provides a reliable source of backup power for homes and helps offset energy costs during high-demand periods.
The PowerBank comes in two versions, with 10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh storage capacities, and can be paired with an additional PowerBank to reach a total capacity of 35.4 kWh—sufficient to power an average U.S. household for up to 20 hours during an outage. This modular design enables users to adjust their storage needs based on household energy demands. GM Energy is offering the PowerBank as part of the GM Energy Home System, which includes a charger and vehicle-to-home (V2H) hardware for transferring energy between a GM electric vehicle and a properly equipped home. Through GM’s vehicle mobile apps, customers can remotely manage and monitor their home energy system, providing a high degree of control and customization.
Expanding Capabilities with Vehicle-to-Home Charging and Solar Options
GM Energy’s approach to residential energy includes compatibility with its V2H charging products, introduced earlier this year. V2H technology enables compatible GM EVs to power a home during outages or supply extra power as needed. Customers who already have V2H hardware can integrate the new PowerBank for greater energy storage capacity and added security during power outages. Additionally, GM offers an optional solar panel kit to provide an alternative energy source, which can further enhance energy independence and sustainability for homeowners. GM Energy’s partner, Qmerit, handles the installation of these solar kits, ensuring compatibility with the existing GM Energy setup.
The Push for Modularity and Energy Independence
Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, highlighted the unique modularity of GM Energy’s products, explaining that this flexibility allows customers to better control their energy usage, making the PowerBank and V2H options especially valuable for those concerned with energy security and sustainability. “The flexibility of our energy management tools, combined with one of the market’s largest lineups of vehicle-to-home-capable EVs, gives our customers more control over their energy use,” Sheffer stated. This modularity could play a critical role in helping homeowners navigate increasingly frequent power outages, integrate renewable energy, and reduce overall reliance on the grid.
Comparisons with Other Automakers’ Energy Solutions
GM’s PowerBank isn’t the only product in this expanding market. Tesla, which pioneered residential energy storage with its Powerwall in 2015, offers backup energy solutions that store and distribute power during outages or periods of high demand. Similarly, Ford Motor Co.’s V2H system for its F-150 Lightning allows the truck’s battery to power a home, with Ford estimating that an F-150 Lightning with an extended-range battery can supply energy to an average home for up to three days. Meanwhile, BMW announced plans to release the “Neue Klasse” EVs in 2025, designed to store energy that can be sent back to the grid or used to power homes. These developments reflect a broader industry trend toward bidirectional charging and energy storage, where automakers are exploring new ways for EVs to support residential energy needs.
Customer Experience and Support for GM Energy Products
To provide prospective buyers with a clear understanding of its products, GM Energy has set up an interactive website where customers can connect with product specialists to learn more about the PowerBank, V2H options, and solar integration. This resource aims to address questions about installation, costs, and the integration of these systems with existing home energy setups, reflecting GM’s commitment to a seamless user experience as it expands its energy product offerings.
As part of a broader movement, these innovations in home energy storage and EV charging systems underscore the evolving role of automakers, who are now addressing not only transportation but also energy management solutions. GM’s PowerBank is positioned as a flexible, accessible tool for energy-conscious consumers, especially those interested in reducing grid reliance and embracing renewable energy options. Through these offerings, GM Energy is paving the way for a more resilient and adaptive home energy landscape, providing customers with tools to save on costs, increase their energy independence, and leverage the full potential of their electric vehicles.
In a rapidly changing energy market, these products offer promising solutions for sustainability, energy security, and cost management, reflecting the shifting priorities of automakers in the EV age. As more consumers adopt these systems, the impact on home energy practices and the auto industry alike could be profound, helping bridge the gap between transportation and residential energy in meaningful ways.
